Fanad Head with its magnificent lighthouse erected in 1818, marks the entrance to Lough Swilly. Fanad Head Lighthouse was built along the Fanad Peninsula as a result of the Saldana being wrecked on the treacherous rocks below the Head with all lives lost. The only survivor was a parrot, which was identified by a silver collar with the name of the ship on it. From the grounds of the attractive lighthouse you can see the rugged horn of Dunaff Head across the bay.
